Cape George Yachts founded by New Zealander Cecil Lange in 1974 is known for building hand crafted classics, timeless, bullet proof, and beautiful. This is a William Atkins design dating from the 1930s that was modified and adapted to fiberglass by Ed Monk.
The hull for this vessel was laid up in 1985. It was then completed and commissioned for sea in 1990. The current owners have since 2011 invested well over $100,000 in refits, and upgrades which include new engine, new standing rigging, new sails, new electronics, new electrical and much more. Also done were new deck bulwarks (these were problematic as originally engineered) which are now solid fiberglass.
The design is a classic long keel and short overhang resulting in a relatively long water line. You have a boat with relatively high average speeds yet very sea-kindly motion and a very strong construction. The perfect blue water combination and a wonderful blend of classic and modern. The interior is warm wood construction of teak, Port Orford cedar and mahogany.
“Serafina” was sailed on her own bottom from Seattle to the Mediterranean in 2014/15, and has cruised the Mediterranean ever since. She is a Panama Canal registered vessel, and there is cruising blog of her experience (see below). Her cruising equipment is mostly manual, sturdy, and repairable, with low electricity demand.
“Serafina” is currently in Licata, Sicily, an easy reach to some of the most iconic and beautiful cruising grounds in the Mediterranean. Licata is an ancient, formerly walled town – friendly, economical and welcoming to an active international cruising community.
